A special form of geography teaching is studying in the field. Field trips offer good opportunities for this. Unfortunately, field trips are rare in primary school geography teaching, although it is the best teaching situation in which students can gain experiences. The process of the direct gathering of information (concrete experience), studying these bits of information (analysis), transferring information (forming concepts; generalizations), finding possible connections between the concepts (synthesis) which can be used elsewhere, too (active application) is often assumed to be the example of the proper learning process. Nevertheless, lots of teachers are reluctant to try it.
